Redwood decking remains the pride and joy of J&W Lumber. All of the inherent properties of Redwood are seen in the redwood decking of today, natural beauty, unequaled dimensional stability and resistance to insects and decay.
Available in the traditional nominal 2x4 and 2x6 inch dimensions, Redwood decking is now available at J&W in the popular 5/4 inch size. 5/4 inch (actual size 1 1/16" x 5 1/2") is economical, easy to use and improves the utilization of a renewable resource.
All of our J&W air-seasoned Redwood decking is available in Construction Common, Select, Construction Heart and B Grade.
Installation
2x4 and 2x6 Redwood decking will span 24" on center run perpendicular to joists, when run diagonally decrease joist spacing to 16". Typical builders today will use 16" O.C. for most applications just to assure no sponginess in the feel underfoot.
For 5/4 inch redwood decking joists should be spaced no further than 16" O.C. and run at 12" O.C. when boards are run diagonally. As with all deck boards end joints must fall over joists.
Leave 1/8" spacing between boards and always predrill holes at board end to help prevent splitting. It is preferable to install boards with the bark side up (frown down) to help prevent grain lifting but not mandatory. Typical installations will have the best face upwards.
J&W recommends install ation with HDG or Stainless Steel screws using two fasteners at each joist. Use fasteners long enough to penetrate into the joists at least 1 1/2". This pattern will hold the board in place and help to further reduce any chance of cupping. |
